You are ready with your website and don’t know how the search engines will index your website, why your website is not listed in any of the search engines, what you need to do in order to make your website visible on the internet. This tutorial is for you.

There are a number of ways you can start promoting your website and attracting more traffic to your website.

  • Search engine Submission: - Fist thing you need to do is to submit your website to different search engines so that they get to know that a new website has come in the internet world. The tutorial on how to submit your website to search engines under SEO section will help you.
  • Optimizing your website for search engines:-

Search engine robots read HTML tags known as tags in order to determine the contents of a site. By using tags you are offering data to search engines to help them index your site. Such tags include the following examples:

<title>Title of your site</title>
<meta name="description" content="A description on your site">
<meta name="keywords" content="Keywords found in your site whereby each keyword is separated by a comma"></head>

So three important factors that will ensure good listing in search engines are

1. The Title of the Website
2. The Meta Tags including: The Description Meta Tag, the Keyword Meta Tag and the Revisit Meta Tag.
3. The Content of the Website

Title should be relevant to the content of your website and is displayed at the top of a webpage when it is opened in the browser.

Meta tags tell the search engines about the keywords that search engine should look in the page to see the relevancy of that webpage. Description is a expansion of the keywords and telling a little further about the webpage contents

Finally content is the king. If your webpage has contents which are unique in the internet then your webpage is bound to get good ranking in its relevant domain.

Please note that many search engines may take 4-6 weeks to add your URL. You be patient.

  • using webmaster tools:-

A good method is to use the webmaster tools of each search engine to see the index status and continuously keep updating the website links in the respective search engines. A good tutorial on yahoo and Google webmaster tools and msn webmaster tools can be found under SEO section of knowurtech.com.

  • Using sitemaps:-

 In its simplest terms, a Sitemap is a list of the pages on your website. Creating and submitting a Sitemap helps make sure that a search engine knows about all the pages on your site, including URLs that may not be discoverable by a search engine normal crawling process.

You can also use a Sitemap to provide search engines with additional information about your pages, including:

  • How often the pages on your site change. For example, you might update your product page daily, but update your About Me page only once every few months.
  • The date each page was last modified.
  • The relative importance of pages on your site. For example, your home page might have a relative importance of 1.0, category pages have an importance of 0.8, and individual blog entries or product pages have an importance of 0.5. This priority only indicates the importance of a particular URL relative to other URLs on your site, and doesn't impact the ranking of your pages in search results.

One sample sitemap is as shown below

  <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>
-<urlset xmlns="http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9 http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9/sitemap.xsd">
- <url>
  <loc>http://knowurtech.com/</loc>
  <priority>0.8</priority>
  <changefreq>weekly</changefreq>
  </url>
- <url>
  <loc>http://knowurtech.com/networking/dns_queries.html</loc>
  <priority>0.6</priority>
  <changefreq>weekly</changefreq>
  </url>
- <url>
  <loc>http://knowurtech.com/networking/configuring_mrtg-part-1.html</loc>
  <priority>0.6</priority>
  <changefreq>weekly</changefreq>
  </url>
- <url>
  <loc>http://knowurtech.com/networking/configuring_mrtg-part-2.html</loc>
  <priority>0.6</priority>
  <changefreq>weekly</changefreq>
  </url>

Save it as an xml file and keep it at the root directory of your website.
You can submit sitemaps to different search engines using their webmaster tools as discussed earlier. Whenever you add new content to your website, add the new links in sitemap and resubmit to the search engines. It is very important to resubmit the sitemaps whenever any new changes are made.
