Good tip for knowing part number of Cisco devices

Platform: - Cisco routers and switches
Keywords: - : how to identify the part number of Cisco devices, how to find which interfaces and cards are installed in a Cisco device, identifying modules and line cards installed in a Cisco device.
Author: - Dinesh Aggarwal

When dealing with hardware analysis and troubleshooting, show diag is a very useful command. The output shows the details and status of all the modules and line cards, but it doesn't give the exact part numbers of the modules as per Cisco documents. To get the associated part numbers, email the output of show diag to diag@external.cisco.com.  This is an automated tool. You will get a reply with the exact part numbers. This will be useful for software hardware compatibility analysis and hardware replacements.

As a test we issues show diag command on a router which gave the following output.

router#sh diag

We mailed the output of this command to diag@external.cisco.com with no subject in the email. We got the following automated reply after 5 minutes.

Slot 0: C3825 2GE Mainboard
Slot 0: WIC-2T
Slot 1: NM-2FE2W-V2

That’s great. We got to know the exact part numbers. Use this tip to know the exact part numbers of the modules and line cards installed on your Cisco devices.

The best method:-

Show inventory command is the best method to get these details. This command was introduced in 12.3(4)T. The show inventory command retrieves and displays inventory information about each Cisco product in the form of a unique device identifier (UDI). The Cisco UDI is a combination of three separate data elements: a PID which can be used to order a Cisco product, version identifier (VID), and the serial number (SN).

The Cisco UDI refers to each product as an entity. Some entities, such as a chassis, will have subentities like slots. Each entity will display on a separate line in a logically-ordered presentation that is arranged hierarchically by Cisco entities.
